Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) was established on 1st May 1997 under the Order of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Corporation) 1997 and the Order of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Campus) 1997 through the Government Gazette P.U (A) 132 & 133 dated 24th February 1997.
Located in Tanjung Malim, Perak Darul Ridzuan. UPSI has two campuses namely Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus (KSAJS) and Sultan Azlan Shah Campus (KSAH) that is unique in term of education leadership based on historical splendor and leading global changes.

Distinctively Swathed In The Legacy Of Three Generations
Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris or Sultan Idris Education University of Education (UPSI) is a Public Institution of Higher Education (IPTA) which plays an important part in the history of our nation’s education. This institution grows in stages from a college to a renowned university. The growth of UPSI was developed through three important periods whereby it started with the SITC period (November 29, 1922-1957, MPSI (1957-1987) and IPSI (February 21, 1987 – April 1997). On May 1997, the institution was announced and named Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris based on the Government Gazette P.U. (A) 132 & 133 dated 24th February 1997 under the Order of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Corporation) and the Order of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Campus) 1997.
Teacher Training College
The role of R.O Winstedt was stated in the history of SITC as he was among those who came up with an idea of having a central college to train teachers and widen up the educational scope during that period. This idea arose as soon as he returned from a visit to the Java land and Philippines. The proposal was brought up to the Residents Conference in May 10, 1917.
He also proposed that the location where the college will be built should be on fertile land in order to suit the curriculum needs which were mostly based on agricultural skills. The location should also be within the railway, main roads as well as the river networks. Another aspect that should be considered was that the population composition should be of a moderate number.
Location
In the process of looking for a suitable location, Tanjong Malim was seen as the most strategic and suitable place in meeting the criteria and geographical factors desired by Winstedt. In May 26, 1917 Tanjong Malim was officially chosen as the place for the construction of the college.
A 64 hectare land was purchased in Tanjong Malim for $49,000.00 to build a campus and the construction work began in August 1919. Buildings were designed with medieval gothic characteristics. The construction work of the college was completed in 1922. SITC was inaugurated on 29th November 1922 by Sir W. George Maxwell, the Chief Secretary of the Government of the Federation of Malay States.
Sultan Idris Training College (SITC)
Meanwhile, the proposal to name the college Sultan Idris Training College (SITC) was presented to His Royal Highness Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah and His Royal Highness granted the approval. The name of Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah was then immortalized as the name of this college to show appreciation towards His Highness contribution in the educational field. Almarhum HRH Paduka Seri Sultan Idris Musyidul Adzam Shah was the 28th Sultan of Perak and had ruled Perak from 1889-1916.
The establishment of SITC was seen as the beginning of an era that intellectual the thinking and educational spheres of the Malays. The Federation of Malay States Education Director, Sir Wolffe in his speech during the SITC inauguration said that, this day signified a historical day for the Malays because it (SITC establishment) was the starting point of the Malay’s vernacular education development. According to him, the Malays felt that this was a high recognition, and also a priceless appreciation for the improvement of the educational status for the Malay children.
SITC developed rapidly. The intake for the trainees were not only limited to the Malays in Malaya but it spread to Brunei, British Borneo and Singapore. In March 1924, SITC produced its first 58 batch of trained teachers. The number of trained teachers produced had increased from year to year. In was in this era that the effort was begun to build a Malay civilisation through the use of Malay language. The Pejabat Karang-Mengarang became the official mouthpiece to uphold and raise the standard of the mother tongue. This effort has carried out by Zainal Abidin Ahmad or popularly known as Pendeta Za’ba.
The teacher training curriculum in SITC focused on the basic knowledge of teaching, besides handicraft and agriculture. From the moment of its establishment until then, SITC continuously excelled in contributing to the people and country. It was seen as the finest ‘university’ in training Malay teachers.
SITC Student Intake
Beginning from 19th November 1922, about 115 first batch of male trainees were registered. A few days after the registration, five more trainees were accepted and the total amounted to 120 trainees. 70 teacher trainees from the first batch were from Maktab Perguruan Melayu Melaka and 50 were from Maktab Perguruan Matang. The total number of the teaching staff were four Europeans, seven Malay teachers, one weaving teacher from Manila and also an Al-Quran teacher from Matang. They were O.T. Dussek (Principal), M.R. Holgate, W.B.O. Sir Williams, D.H. Ghrist, Mohammad HAshim Hj Taib, Noordin Hj Harun, Ibrahim Dato’ Muda Linggi, Abdul Rahman Hj Muhyiddin, Hanafiah Md Saman, Mohamad Said Hj Hussin, Abdul Hadi, Mr. W Olaguera (Manila) and Lebai Jaafar Abdul Rashid (Al-Quran teacher). O.T Dussek was appointed the first SITC principal. The number of teaching staff increased in 1923. The increase in the teaching staff involved 10 Malay teachers and a teacher from the Phillippines. Initially, these teachers were the teaching staff from Maktab Perguruan Matang which was closed and some were from Maktab Perguruan Melaka.
Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris (MPSI)
In 1957, in fulfilling the requirement of the Razak Report, SITC changed its name to Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris (MPSI). Starting from this date, MPSI upheld the Malay outlook, character and personalities; this came with the change in the administration of SITC which was handed by the Europeans to the Malay scholars.
Although the name of SITC was changed, its tradition became the root to sow excellence in the institution during the MPSI era and also the following eras. The role of MPSI was not only to train and educate future teachers, but to be a platform to express the voices of scholars and also the Malay nationalists. The development of the Malay language as a corpus was further intensified with the introduction of creative traditional writing among teacher trainees and the teaching staff. This tradition had begun during the SITC era under the hands of Harun Aminurrashid and Punggok, but spread greatly during the MPSI era. It was during this time, several great poets, short story writers and Malay novelists entered the scene. Among them were A. WAhab Ali, Ali Majod, Kasmani Haji Arif, Awang Had Salleh, Hassan Ali, Othamn Puteh, Dharmawijaya, Kemala, Suhaimi Haji Mohammad, Shahnon Ahmad, Suratman Markasan S.N, Yura Halim and others.
On 13th January 1975, MPSI broke its tradition when it accepted 140 female students. This new development had created a new scenario in the MPSI tradition. Although female students were accepted, MPSI continued to move forward as an excellent and prominent teaching institution without differentiating status and gender.
Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris (IPSI)
The MPSI era ended on 21th February 1987 that come to be known college was upgraded to an institution to be known as Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris (IPSI). The IPSI era was more challenging due to its position to boost the aspirations of its citizens, the Malay society and also the ruling government to witness IPSI as the pillar of hope to increase the people’s education standard, especially the Malays. Thus, IPSI initiated a far ranging step by introducing various plans. The plans included the introduction of the Kursus Sijil Perguruan Khas (KPSK) in 1987 and Kursus Perguruan Lepasan Ijazah (KPLI) which started in 1988. In 1993, the Twinning Course with Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM) was introduced in the fields of Malay Language and Physical Education.
The roles of SITC and MPSI in the IPSI era were further strengthened through a network of cooperation with other parties outside IPSI. Thus, IPSI went beyond its own scope and boundary. IPSI moved in line with the development of other public higher learning institutions in the context of realising the government’s aim in producing capable and useful manpower for the well being of society and the nation. The role of IPSI continued until 1993 in which the teacher training system adopted the integrated system whereby every teacher training college trained teachers for both the primary and secondary schools.
Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI)
Ten years into its existence, IPSI entered a new era in 1997 when it was officially upgraded into a university. In implementing the government’s order through the Government Gazette P.U. (A) 132 & 133 dated 24th February 1997, the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris was established, which was also known today by its acronym UPSI.
Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) started its operation on 2nd May 1997 with a total of 350 students. Datuk Dr. Ashari Che Mat was appointed the first Vice Chancellor whereby Professor Dr. Abu Bakar Nordin (Dato’) became the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic. They were assisted by Encik Sayuti Sahlan, Encik Yusof Semahil and Encik Rusley Taib to develop UPSI during the early years.
With only 6 administrative staffs and 29 academics which were mostly borrowed from other agencies under the Ministry of Education, UPSI started the move into the education field with full determination and noble aims. Evidently, it is not easy for UPSI since it has to face many challenges and obstacles. With its strong will and commitment plus the support from the Ministry of Education, UPSI moved step by step to build its legasy and now it managed to be on par with other more developed higher learning institutions.
The development of infrastructure started with the construction of the Chancellory Building in 1999 and the Students Residential Complex in Behrang Ulu. In early 2001, the development was more rapid with the construction of the Gymnasium, Library, Auditorium, Music Education Complex, lecture rooms and others. Some of the other infrastructures from the SITC-MPSI-IPSI era were renovated to suit the technological advancement but at the same time maintaining the original structures. The rapid development has upheld the image of UPSI as a premier higher learning institution.
The name of UPSI reflects the symbol of excellence because this is the only university that specialises in teacher training and education programmes of study in the first degree as well as post degree levels.
In its early establishment, there were only four faculties which offered ten programmes of study. The faculties were the Faculty of Languages, Faculty of Social Sciences and Art, Faculty of Science and Technology and Faculty of Cognitive Science and Humanities. The number of programmes increased from year to year. In 2002, two new faculties were established which were the Faculty of Business and Economics and Faculty of Information Technology and Communication, thus creating a total of six faculties with 19 courses of study at the first degree level. This increase reflects the major changes carried out to accommodate the academic needs and the increasing number of students.
Today, a total of 10 faculty has been established namely the Faculty of Education and Human Development (FPPM), Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSMT), Faculty of Management and Economics (FPE), Faculty of Sports Science and Coaching (FSSK), Faculty of Music and Performing Arts (FSMP), Faculty of Languages and Communication (FBK), Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSK), Faculty of Technical and Vocational Education (FPTV), Faculty of Art, Sustainability & Creative Industry (FSKIK) and Faculty of Computing & Meta-Technology (META). Currently, UPSI has 62 programs of study (12 Diploma programs, 30 programs for Bachelor of Education, 5 programs for Bachelor with Education, and 15 Bachelor programs). In addition, the Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS) features 87 programs of study (65 Master Programs and 22 PhD programs).
Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus
The ground breaking ceremony of Sultan Azlan Shah Campus was officiated by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah Muhibbuddin Shah on 22nd April 2002. In his opening address, he officially announced the name for UPSI’s main campus in Tanjong Malim as Sultan Abdul Jalil and the new campus in Proton City as Sultan Azlan Shah.
Sultan Azlan Shah Campus
Sultan Azlan Shah Campus was planned since the 8th Malaysia Plan. With the establishment of this new campus, teaching and learning infrastructure in UPSI can be enhanced to better align with the needs of the government to empower and improve the quality of education in the institutions of higher learning.
On 20th February 2012, the campus was officially operational and houses block 1 – block 6 for the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, block 7 – block 9 for the Faculty of Education and Human Development, Block 10 for the Faculty of Management and Economics, Central Lecture Hall (Dewan Kuliah Berpusat), the Great Hall (Dewan Besar) and Experimental Theatre (Panggung Percubaan), Cafeteria, Rotu, Security Station and Security Post, Student Center, Computer Center, Surau and Islamic Centre.
The campus is located about 8 km from the main campus (Sultan Abdul Jalil Campus) in Proton City. The campus has a captivating of the Titiwangsa Mountain range and its surrounded by fresh greenery. The beauty and serenity of this natural surrounding will provide a perfect environment for the student’s learning process. This campus was officiated by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah on 16th June 2012.
Admission of Student in UPSI
Based on the students’ intake for the last seventeen years (1997-2014), the percentage of intake is greater compared to the initial planning during the university’s establishment. Holders of STPM, Diploma or its equivalent showed great interest and it is generally known that UPSI is one of the most popular IPTA among students. From a total of 338 students in 1997, currently (2014) the current enrolment consists is more than 21,554 students for Bachelor Degree, 291 Diploma of Education, 3,125 for Diploma and 5,497 Post Graduates Students. The total of active students in the UPSI campus for 2014 is 30,467 students.
Up to the 16th Convocation last September 2014 (1999-2014), UPSI has produced 48,820 first degree graduates, Diploma and degree graduates (Doctoral and Master Degrees).

Cokmar Universiti
Cokmar yang asalnya merupakan alat senjata diubah bentuknya menjadi sebuah alat lambang kebesaran dan kuasa. Catatan sejarah menunjukkan bahawa pada 19 Mac 1952, Majlis Raja-Raja telah menghadiahkan sebuah cokmar kepada Majlis Perundangan. Rentetan daripada itu wujudlah cokmar negeri- negeri serta institusi pengajian tinggi yang menjadi lambang kuasa penganugerahan ijazah.
Memandangkan pentingnya cokmar, pada 18 Disember 1998, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris telah membuat cokmar rasminya yang diperbuat daripada Perak Sterling (p25ag) berukuran 22G (gauge) tebal dan 105sm panjang.
Cokmar lambang kebesaran Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris adalah limpah kurnia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong bersempena dengan Istiadat Pelantikan Canselor Pertama Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Duli Yang Maha Mulia Raja Permaisuri Perak Darul Ridzuan, Tuanku Bainun di Istiadat Konvokesyen Pertama pada 4 Disember 1999.
Cokmar ini lazimnya digunakan di majlis- majlis rasmi Universiti seperti Istiadat Konvokesyen dan majlis-majlis khas yang dipengerusikan oleh Canselor Universiti sendiri.
Cokmar ini menandakan kebesaran kuasa Canselor sebagai Ketua Universiti.
Bentuk cokmar ini terbahagi kepada tiga bahagian terdiri daripada kepala, badan dan kaki yang tersirat makna di sebaliknya. Bahagian kepala melambangkan makna kesarjanaan doktor falsafah (ijazah ketiga), bahagian badan melambangkan makna kesarjanaan (ijazah kedua) dan bahagian kaki melambangkan strata kesarjanaan (ijazah pertama).
Pada bahagian badan cokmar itu diukir lambang jata negara Malaysia dan motif Bunga Raya yang mencerminkan bahawa institusi ini adalah milik negara kerajaan Persekutuan, dan lambang Universiti untuk menjelaskan identiti dan fungsinya.
Di bahagian kaki cokmar terdapat ikon mata pena yang melambangkan Universiti ini mengamalkan pemikiran intelek dan budaya menyelidik ilmu. Batil yang diletakkan pada bahagian paling bawah cokmar yang dihias ukiran awan larat motif keladi biak menjulang ke atas melambangkan hasrat Universiti ini untuk terus berkembang maju menyebarkan ilmu pengetahuan di samping menjunjung nilai tradisi dan kepercayaan kepada Yang Maha Esa.
Pemilihan motif Keladi Biak sebagai motif hiasan konvokesyen UPSI memiliki makna yang tersendiri. Motif Keladi Biak sebelumnya lebih sinonim dengan motif hias Minangkabau yang mencerminkan watak orang Minangkabau yang bersifat versatil dalam segenap budaya kehidupan. Pemilihan motif ini sebagai simbol keupayaan Anak Kandung Suluh Budiman yang versatil sebagai pendidik yang boleh menyesuaikan diri dengan perubahan dimensi waktu serta pelbagai etnik dan budaya masyarakat yang terdapat di Malaysia khususnya dan dunia umumnya.
Pada 30 November 2021, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris telah menerima cokmar yang baharu menggantikan cokmar sedia ada. Cokmar baharu ini masih mengekalkan motif dan ciri yang asal tetapi ditambahbaik dengan beberapa ciri tambahan seperti ukiran cokmar bersadurkan emas 24K bagi menunjukkan nilai yang gah sebuah institusi pendidikan yang diketuai oleh Canselor sebagai Ketua Universiti.
Logo Concept
The two circles of UPSI logo signify perseverance, ambition and dedication. The sacred motto of the University and the year of its establishment are engrave on the blue outer circle. The red inner circle has a floral design, a keris, alamp, a yellow molecule and a white book, all of which represent the qualities required to realise University’s vision and mission.
University Name
The name of University is available in two languages, Malay (Malay and Jawi) and English. On the left side of the logo, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) words printed in Trajen Pro Small Cap font type in Malay language written in blue, which is to accompany and balance the logo. The logo is dependent to the logotype. In Malay, the university’s name was emphasized by the size of the font to show the spirit of the nationalism.
University’s name written in red in Jawi writing and located below the main logotype. Jawi writing is ethnic heritage and UPSI determined to defend and firm Jawi writing heritage in the future.
Below the fine line, the name of the university is stated in English language which is Sultan Idris Education University (SIEU). In globalized world, it is important to introduce UPSI with an understanable name to the world’s community. In English, it is characterized as strategic in order to change the perceptions of the community towards the university.

Blue Colour
Blue symbolises loyalty, professionalism and unshackled ethics in fulfilling the mission and aims of UPSI.
Yellow Colour
Yellow symbolises sincerity and integrity in performing the obligations entrusted to the University.
Red Colour
Red describe the prominent, dominant, active and progressive image of the University as well as honourable values which are essential in achieving the vision of the University.
Motto
The motto of SITC “Pengetahuan Suluh Budiman” or “Knowledge is the Beacon of Pure Character” is maintained even after the establishment of UPSI. The motto highlights the aspiration of the University in enriching and inculcating knowledge. The flaming torch symbolises the unlimited power of knowledge that burns in every living being and guides people toward a better and more fulfilling life. Nothing is more pure than the burning desire to pursue knowledge.
Yellow Dots
Two yellow dots on the logo of UPSI represent the determination of SITC and UPSI to uphold steadfastly the oath and pledge of the motto “Knowledge is the Beacon of Pure Character”.
Arabesque Form
The eight-calyx flower of an Islamic motif reflects purity of knowledge, education, sincerity and resposibility. It also represents the eight elements in the University’s philosphy, which are Piety, Wisdom, Culture, Civilisation, Humanity, Society, Nationalism and Excellence.
Keris
The Keris is a symbol of authority and responsibility bestowed upon UPSI as a centre for generating knowledge in education, arts, music, language, literature, as well as science and technology.
Lamp
The lamp represents the unique history and establishment of the university which began with SITC. The lamp signifies the rays of knowledge that shine into the souls of our nation. It is hoped that through researches and experiment, these rays of knowledge will continue to flourish.
Molecule
The molecule represents the University’s effort in producing active and progressive individuals in the field of science and technology through the implementation of its philosophy.
Book
The book marks the characteristics of UPSI as a professional learning institution that gravitates towards knowledge.
Three Round Circles
The blue, yellow and white circles stand for the primary functions of UPSI : Teaching, conducting research and rendering services to the community.
All in all, the combination of symbols, shapes, motifs and colours in the logo of the University sketches the unique and professional profile of UPSI as a higher institution of learning. It also gives UPSI a profound corporate image that reflects its quality, competence and resolute determination.

- Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) celebrates the anniversary on 1st May each year. The establishment history followed with its establishment in 1922 as a earliest educational institution in Malaysia with Sultan Idris Training College (SITC). UPSI’s corporate colour is Navy Blue and Red.

Offering quality, holistic education programmes.
- Providing negotiation and advisory services towards at least 80% of final year students in landing a job in accordance with the industry’s needs.
- All programmes will be MQA accredited.
Providing conducive learning environment and infrastructure.
- 100% lecture halls will be equipped with functional education technologies.
- At least 60% of the students will be granted in-campus accommodations.
- The reachability of the University’s Integrated Management System (UIMS) and the UPSINet local area network will at least be at a 98% average throughout the year.
- Library materials will be processed and catalogued within one (1) month to accommodate clients’ reference(s).
- Ensuring that all amenities, tools and services in the lecture halls/rooms will be monitored under the supervision of the JPPHB once per month.
- All students are provided with in-campus health amenities.
Providing clients with quality services from our well qualified academic and administration staff.
- At least 75% of the lecturers are PhD degree holders.
- 100% of our staff reach a cumulative 24 credit hours in their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) point.
Fostering a culture of excellence in the field of research and innovation.
- All lecturers are required to conduct researches.
- Lecturers who have no means of conducting a research will be aided in acquiring a research grant.
- At least 30% of our lecturer will be Head Researchers.
- A response must be given towards the complainant within one (1) work day to inform the aforementioned party that the complaint lodged will be tended to and resolved.
Providing a friendly and professional service.
- At least 85% of the clients will be satisfied with the services provided.
Committed in regards to community services.
- Crafting a plan of action for natural disasters within 48 hours.
- Ensuring that our community services and volunteering activities are performed at least 15 times in a year.
